In with Liam Jacobs as new MMC for Gauteng, Out with Kenny Kunene

Published:

Just over a month has passed since former MP Liam Jacobs left the DA to join the Patriotic Alliance (PA). He has now assumed a prominent position as a councillor for the City of Johannesburg. PA president Gayton McKenzie made this announcement to party supporters on the evening of July 28.

Jacobs takes over from the party’s deputy president, Kenny Kunene, who resigned last week after he was discovered at the Sandton residence of Katiso “KT” Molefe, a murder suspect, during a police operation to arrest Molefe.

McKenzie stated, “The party is deploying Liam Jacobs as the new councillor in the City of Johannesburg.” He emphasized the need for Jacobs to gain experience in local government. Earlier in July, Jacobs was also named the PA’s candidate for mayor in Tshwane for the upcoming 2026 local elections.

“You’re about to tackle the pothole issues in Joburg. This will prepare you for your future role in running Pretoria,” McKenzie added.

While Jacobs will occupy Kunene’s council seat, it remains uncertain if he will also assume Kunene’s responsibilities as the mayoral committee member (MMC) for transport.

Kunene gained notoriety after being found at Molefe’s home, who was implicated in the murder of Oupa Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody, during a drive-by shooting in Woodmead, Johannesburg in 2022. Sefoka and his bodyguard were killed as their vehicle was shot at multiple times.

sources, Kunene claimed he was not acquainted with Molefe but had visited the Sandton property as part of his role as the owner of the online publication African News Global. He stated he was there with an unnamed associate to arrange an exclusive interview with Molefe through his media company.

This incident raises concerns about the increasing influence of organized crime in our political landscape.
