Authorities are probing a potential connection between the firearm involved in the 2023 attempted murder of actress Tebogo Thobejane and several high-profile shootings.
Sources familiar with the case against Gauteng businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala indicate that the weapon may link Thobejane’s near-fatal incident to the unsolved murder of popular DJ Sumbody, as well as the brazen attack on taxi mogul Joe Sibanyoni.
Ballistic tests are underway, and initial findings suggest that shell casings recovered from the N1 highway, where Thobejane narrowly avoided death, may match those from both the site of DJ Sumbody’s fatal shooting and the 2022 assault on Sibanyoni outside the Centurion Golf Estate.
During a court appearance in Alexandra last Friday, Matlala and his partner Tsakani appeared alongside alleged hitmen Tlego Floyd Mabusela and Musa Kekana related to the attempted murder of Thobejane. The prosecution informed the magistrate of plans to file additional charges, referencing cases in Pretoria West and Lyttleton.
Reports from Sunday World indicate that the Lyttleton case pertains to the Sibanyoni incident. “Since these cases fall under different jurisdictions, the state will need to request approval from the national director of prosecutions for centralization,” noted a source involved in the investigation, who also mentioned hearing Sibanyoni’s name.
A knowledgeable insider stated, “If the ongoing ballistic tests confirm the findings, it suggests a single weapon was used across these incidents.” Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe declined to comment on the matter.
