New Developments in Police Scandal: Investigations Reveal Bheki Cele Stayed at Cat Matlala’s Luxury Penthouse
KZN’s police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has uncovered a complex connection involving tenderpreneur Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala and ANC Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, implicating former minister Bheki Cele. Cele reportedly had unrestricted access to Matlala’s lavish Menlyn Maine penthouse while Matlala was under scrutiny.
Matlala faces serious allegations, including a R2.3 billion Tembisa Hospital fraud, an attempted attack on his ex-partner, and a questionable R360 million SAPS health services contract. He allowed Cele to use his luxurious Pretoria residence in January. Although Cele acknowledged visiting it twice, he denies any business affiliations, despite evidence from WhatsApp messages directing hotel staff to “grant access” to his “friend and business partner.”
Notably, Matlala secured a substantial SAPS contract just a week after Cele’s resignation as minister, with his company initially receiving R50 million before the contract was ultimately canceled.
Mkhwanazi’s findings, which include WhatsApp communications, financial records, and directives from Mchunu’s office to disband the Political Killings Task Team, reveal a disturbing trend of political meddling aimed at protecting Matlala and obstructing investigations into his activities.
Additionally, R111,000 was transferred from Matlala’s contract proceeds to a company associated with fixer Brown Mogotsi, who claimed to have direct connections to Mchunu and played a role in undermining the inquiries.
President Ramaphosa has labeled the situation a “grave national security matter,” yet calls for “restraint,” seemingly ignoring the already eroded public trust.
