A man, Mauritz Andries Rheeder, aged 57, is under arrest for the alleged murder of his partner, Riana Nel, aged 50. In a heartfelt Facebook post on June 2, 2025, Rheeder questioned President Cyril Ramaphosa about how he would react if he found his wife in a similar situation. However, subsequent police investigations uncovered a different narrative. Riana had visited Rheeder at his workplace, an auto dealership in Mthatha, on May 31, where an argument ensued, and Rheeder reportedly assaulted her. Despite this, he delayed seeking medical help until the next day, claiming she was attacked by unidentified individuals near the dealership. Later, on June 6, while visiting Riana at the hospital and offering her refreshments, she fell ill and passed away that same day. Rheeder is currently detained, with a hearing scheduled for June 17, 2025, where he is expected to request bail.
