After 75 years, we say goodbye to Goodyear Tyres in South Africa as they close shop

Published:

Goodyear’s Kariega plant in South Africa has been a key player in the country’s tire manufacturing sector for over 75 years, contributing significantly to the local economy. In 2023, the plant reached a noteworthy achievement when its tires, including Off-The-Road (OTR) Bias tires for mining vehicles, were certified as ‘Proudly South African,’ showcasing Goodyear’s dedication to local production and job opportunities. However, in June 2025, Goodyear announced the impending closure of the Kariega facility, jeopardizing around 900 jobs and prompting concerns and protests from employees and the community over the closure’s economic repercussions in the area. This decision is part of Goodyear’s broader plan to revamp its operations in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region.
