Alerts are in place across South Africa as the Weather Service anticipates disruptive winds in certain regions, and residents of the Northern and Western Cape are advised to prepare for intensely cold and damp conditions this weekend.
A Yellow Level 4 warning for strong winds is active from Table Bay to Plettenberg Bay, remaining in effect until Saturday, according to the forecasters. They caution that this situation will complicate maritime travel and could potentially harm vulnerable, less formal housing.
“A Yellow Level 4 warning for hazardous swells is predicted for the stretch of coastline between Table Bay and Plettenberg Bay on Saturday and Sunday. This will present challenges for smaller boats and recreational water users,” the Weather Service stated.
Separately, a Yellow Level 2 warning for powerful winds has been issued for the Hantam and Karoo Hoogland regions within the Northern Cape.
“This weather system is anticipated to affect the Central and Little Karoo, and the eastern sections of the Cape Winelands in the Western Cape on Saturday,” Saws explained.
Saturday will bring frigid, wet, and gusty conditions to the Karoo Hoogland in the Northern Cape and the Witzenberg area of the Western Cape. Simultaneously, powerful gale-force winds are anticipated over the Chris Hani and Joe Gqabi district municipalities, accompanied by turbulent seas along the coast from Plettenberg Bay to Peddie, continuing into Sunday.
The remainder of the nation will see overcast to moderately cool weather, with the Eastern Cape experiencing unusually warm temperatures in select locations.
