The Emathuneni Sobonana Gospel star, Lusanda Mcinga due for spine surgery

The celebrated vocalist behind “Emathuneni Sobonana,” gospel icon Lusanda Mcinga, is currently facing significant health challenges.

The 61-year-old artist reveals she’s largely confined to her bed, struggling with mobility due to persistent spinal problems. “My condition isn’t good. I experience constant discomfort in my back, lower back, and neck. Roughly four or five vertebrae lack cartilage and require surgical intervention; furthermore, two discs in my neck need repair,” explained the beloved Gospel performer.

“Thankfully, my voice, a gift from above, remains unaffected. I still fulfill my engagements because I believe God calls on me to minister to His followers through song. However, I now perform while seated; standing is simply impossible,” she shared.

The singer, and also the mother of acclaimed gospel artist Betusile Mcinga, is awaiting guidance from her medical team regarding a potential operation.

“A surgery date hasn’t been scheduled yet. I underwent an MRI scan back in 2021, and now it’s 2025; the doctors believe the outcomes may have shifted with time and age. They’re recommending another scan to re-evaluate the results and determine the best course of treatment.”

“I rely on potent painkillers constantly. Sadly, they primarily induce sleep, only for the pain to return upon waking,” she admitted.

She expressed reluctance to seek public assistance at this time.

“I recall being publicly criticized when I previously requested contributions to fund my album recording. Therefore, I’m hesitant to ask for support,” the singer stated.

Lusanda voiced concerns that her doctors were apprehensive about performing the surgery.

“At 61, and with my build, the prospect of spinal surgery presents certain risks; it could potentially exacerbate or complicate my health, which is why the doctors are proceeding with caution. I believe they are hesitant to proceed.

“They seem to be delaying my treatment, perhaps because I’m dedicated to serving the Lord. Singing is my calling, and now I can’t fully express it. My three sons often assist me, but they are currently unemployed and have never held jobs outside of our family. I’ve always been the primary caregiver for them, and the situation is difficult because they are already married and need to prioritize their own families. When I’m unable to work, we face financial hardships.”
