An SMU student seeks patent for the Pepperboom tree’s healing potential against respiratory illnesses.

Lesiba Lekgoathi, pursuing a doctorate at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, has secured a preliminary patent for a new substance extracted from the peperboom tree— a plant long valued in local areas for its ability to alleviate common ailments like colds and influenza.

His investigation uncovered geranylgeranyl acetate, a potent diterpenoid that effectively stops two essential SARS-CoV-2 enzymes: PLpro and Mpro. These enzymes are vital for viral replication and immune system evasion.

By disrupting their function, the compound halts viral development and strengthens the body’s natural defenses.

“The substance’s capacity to target multiple aspects of the virus sets it apart,” explains Lekgoathi.

This represents a significant advancement in health innovation originating from Africa!
