Gautrain High-Speed Rail Extension to Limpopo
In addition to expanding within Gauteng, plans are underway to extend the Gautrain high-speed rail network to other provinces, with Limpopo identified as the primary partner.
According to reports, “The provincial governments of Gauteng and Limpopo have reached an agreement to jointly contribute to the establishment of a railway line connecting the two provinces, facilitating the transportation of goods and people.” Specific financial details regarding this “groundbreaking initiative” were not disclosed.
The project will be jointly funded and managed by the two provinces, with private sector investment also expected. Getaway reported in 2024 that the proposed route will span 420km of high-speed rail between Pretoria and Polokwane, with additional stations serving towns such as Louis Trichardt and Musina.
The development of this route is anticipated to coincide with the planned Gautrain expansion scheduled for next year.
